Auction mart sales round-up: Sheepdog sells to £8,000 and exceptional dairy trade at Brock

A round-up of this week's livestock sales including Shrewsbury, Brock, Barnard Castle, Hexham and Bentham

Working sheepdogs sell to £8,000 at Skipton's online sale

Kevin Evans, Brecon, once again claimed the top price at Skipton's online sale of working sheepdogs when selling Nan for £8,000. The April 2023-born black and white bitch by Tanhill Glen out of John Griffith's Flass, sold to US horse trainer, Ben Baldus, Texas.

Mr Evans also sold April 2022-born Jam, a fully trained black and white bitch by A. Edwards' Sweep out of I. W. Jones' Gwen for £7,400 to Brendan Gillespie, Mayo.

Sky, a fully trained January 2022-born black and white bitch by Ricky Hutchinson's Jonah, from D. Purtill, Westhoughton, made £3,600 to Jess Dean, York.

Topping the part-trained entries at £5,000 was Peg, a black and white bitch, also by Jonah, from E. Jane, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, which went to Paul Johnson, Staffordshire. 

Two more part-trained dogs made £3,100. First was Tom, an 18-month-old tricoloured dog from J. Williams, Wrexham, which is heading to Knock Squire Farm, Aire.

At the same money was Jet, a smooth-coated August 2022-born black and white bitch from J. Alton, Sheffield, which went to Elen Williams, Denbigh. 

A brace of pups from Ian Carroll, Anglesey, made a total of £5,000. His Glan y Gors Jody, a five-month-old black and white bitch sold for £3,800 to Adam Stobart, Barnard Castle, while its brown and white litter sister Glan y Gors Lass reached £1,200 to Will Gayton, Banbury.  

A two-month-old black and tan New Zealand Huntaway bitch pup from C. Mundell, Glasgow, sold for £1,350 to Cai Pritchard, Gwynedd.  

Averages: Registered – broken dogs, £1,625; broken bitches, £4,083; part-broken dogs, £2,225; part-broken bitches, £2,850; unbroken dog pups, £575; unbroken bitch pups, £1,450.

Champion tops Brock dairy cattle at £3,450

There was an exceptional trade for dairy cattle at Brockholes Arms, peaking at £3,450 for the pre-sale show champion Whitecarr Rubicon Bettina 2 from T. Cowell, Preston. The buyer was Wannop Farms, Morecombe, which also paid £3,180 for Pennine Peace 981, a heifer giving 33kg from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

The reserve champion rosette went to J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, for the first of their pair of heifers, which sold for £2,920 to Fred Blezard, Ribchester, who also bought their other heifer at £2,950.

E.H. and R. Eccles, Chorley, sold Denhamhill Abundant Susan Red at £3,150 and Denhamhill Rooster Annabel at £3,050, while A. B. and J. Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe, sold two of their Liscabank heifers to £3,020 and £3,000.  

Cows topped at £2,980 for a 40kg second calver from A. Kippax, Kirkland. Alan Robson, Singleton, sold a second calver at £2,950 and both J. Burrow and Son, Barton, and Messrs Parkinson both sold second calvers to £2,900.

A pen of bulling heifers from J. A. and E. A. Burrow, Lancaster, topped at £1,320 and averaged £1,000.

Averages: Newly calved cows, £2,770; newly calved heifers, £2,731.

Store cattle average up at Hexham

The sale of store cattle at Hexham averaged £1,899, a rise of £90/head on the week, topping at £2,700.

The sale leader was an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh, who also sold a Charolais steer at £2,500, with his pen of nine averaging £2,393.

Heifers sold to £2,500 for a 20-month-old Limousin cross from John Guiry, Glanton, who sold four to average £2,267.

Mid-aged cattle topped at £2,100 for a Hereford cross steer from Walker Bros, Satley, and a Limousin from Lawrence and Sid Bousfield, Low Stokoe.

Charolais steers of this age peaked at £2,080 for Steven Crozier, Ecclefechan, and heifers sold to £2,000 for Alan and Peter Forster, Lowes Fell, Hexham, with a Limousin cross.

Weanlings peaked at £1,540 for steer calves and £1,400 for heifers, both Limousin crosses out of Salers cross mothers consigned from Whitfield Estates, Mainsrigg.

Midlock flock tops Bentham sale 

The sale of individual breeding sheep at Bentham topped at £2,600 for a Bluefaced Leicester shearling from J. Wight and Sons' Midlock flock, Biggar, which sold to Jimmy Bell, Lanark.

The champion from the same home sold for £1,800, with a ewe at the same money from Ashley Caton, Skipton, who also sold a gimmer hogg at £1,400.

Swaledales topped at £1,000 for a shearling gimmer from Robin Booth, Feizor.

Chris and Henry Fawcett, Carnforth, topped the Dalesbred section at £900 for a shearling. Ewes sold to £610 for the champion from R. H. Close, Skipton.

Herdwicks sold to £700 for Arnold Lancaster, Coniston, for the reserve champion.

A pen of Dutch Spotted from Kevin and Lauren Dagger, Garstang, topped at £580 for a shearling and £520 for a ewe.

Breeding cattle to £2,250 at Barnard Castle

The sale of store and breeding cattle at Barnard Castle topped at £4,250 for a heifer and calf from I. M. Maughan, Hamsterley, who sold other outfits at £3,550 and £3,500.

In-calf cows sold to £2,100 and £2,050 for G. T. and E. Atkinson, Winston, Darlington.

Store cattle sold to £2,100 for a Limousin steer from D. and J. Hunnam, Cockfield, who also had the top priced heifer, a Limousin, at £1,975.

Top priced bull at £1,945 was a Limousin from J. W. R. and M. Suddes, Wolsingham.

Averages: Feeding bulls, £1,666.11; steers, £1,656.27; heifers, £1,461.16.

Flying trade at Shrewsbury's dairy dispersal

The Shrewsbury dispersal of the autumn calving Holstein herd on behalf of Guto and Ellie Lewis, Lower Frankton, Oswestry, sold for what the auctioneers believe are record averages for a commercial herd, at £2,523.55 for 101 in-milk cows and £2,554 for heifers.

Overall, 55 cattle sold from £2,500 to £3,000, 29 from £3,000 to £3,500 and 25 for £2,000 or less. Top price was £3,500 for a second calver which calved on December 4.

This was followed by a brace at £3,450, a fifth-lactation cow and a third calved Applejax daughter. August calvers sold to £3,350 and a fourth-lactation, October-calved cow sold for £3,250.

The older cows in the herd, from fifth to seventh lactation, sold from £2,200 to £2,600.

Heifers topped at £3,400 for an August-calved Denovo Sizzler daughter, in calf again. A December-calved heifer by ABS Eldridge made £3,250 and an in-calf heifer made £2,100.

The two Jerseys in the sale, offspring of a wedding gift and property of Guto and Ellie's children, Medi and Alffi, sold at £1,750 for Medi's second-calved cow and £1,980 for Alffi's September-calved heifer.

Dairies to £2,900 at Penrith

The first dairy sale of the year at Penrith topped at £2,900 for a seven-weeks-calved Holstein heifer giving 37kg from D. W. Cannon and Son, Low Abbey, which was bought by  H. and E. M. Hunter and Son, Berrier.

Making £2,600 was a five-weeks-calved Holstein heifer giving 28kg from Messrs Turnbull, Plumpton, bought by Messrs Johnston, Wetheral, with this consignment averaging £2,500.

A pure Jersey second-calved cow giving 32kg realised £1,550 for Messrs Cannon.

The Dairy Shorthorn section topped at £2,400 for a Dairy Shorthorn cross British Friesian heifer giving 30kg from S. Armstrong and Sons, Moorriggs, which sold to D. and K. I. Clemetson, Workington. Messrs Armstrong also sold a run of six dry cows, in-calf to the Simmental bull, due in March, to average £2,016, topping at 1,950gns three times.

Averages: Black and white heifers in-milk, £2,400; Dairy Shorthorn heifers in-milk, £2,086.50; black and white cows in-milk; £2,086; Dairy Shorthorn dry cows, £2,016; Jersey cows and heifers in-milk, £1,525.
