Stirling Bull Sales: High of 32,000gns for Aberdeen-Angus

Buyers, vendors and visitors returned to United Auctions for the first round of this year’s Stirling bull sales, with a strong trade achieved across all breeds

Aberdeen-Angus bulls led the day's trade at 32,000gns in the first Stirling February showcase. With 66 bulls sold and a clearance rate of 67%, the trade averaged £7,727, up £1,542 on the year.  

Chief executive of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, Robert Gilchrist, said there was a good number of pedigree buyers ringside, but not as many commercial buyers, suggesting the strength of the current beef trade may not have fed through the chain yet.

The father and son team of Alastair and Graeme Fraser, Forfar, led the bidding at 32,000gns for Idvies Pink Profit Z149, marking their best price to date. The April 2023-born bull is by the 30,000gns Duncanziemere Jacobite W374, which the pair bought in a shared partnership with Ballindalloch Estate, Banffshire, at Stirling in February 2022. Out of Idvies Pinky Paula W933, which has bred bulls to 16,000gns, it sold to Neil Wattie, Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Next at 28,000gns was the reserve overall and junior champion Drumhill Kristoff Z566 from Jonathan and Lisa Doyle, Cookstown. Beating their previous top price of 16,000gns, the AI son of Glenade Drumshanbo T379 sold to Andrew Hodge, Rulesmains, Berwickshire.

Alan and Steven Lawson, Hallington, were next at 14,000gns for their August 2023-born Hallington Epic Z883.

From the first crop of calves by Tonley Elmo X805 which was bought as a six-month-old at the Tonley production sale, it sold to Hamish Sclater, Turriff.

Making 13,500gns was McCornick Ecosse Z088, a home-bred May 2023-born McCornick Kaiser V579 son from Martin McCornick, Newton Stewart. Full brother to the 2019 Royal Highland Show Aberdeen-Angus champion, McCornick Keira U451, it sold to Nantyglasdwr Farms, Hay-on-Wye.

Senior champion, Deveron Elliott Z923 from Hamish Sclater, was next at 11,500gns. The Rawburn Braw Lad R041 son was placed male champion at last year's Turriff Show, reserve male champion at the Winter National Show and reserve yearling bull champion at the Black Beauty Bonanza. It sold to The Scottish Government Bull Stud, Knocknagael.  

Two bulls sold for 11,000gns. The first and setting a new record price for a red bull was Mosshall Red Earl Z575 from George Taylor, Blackburn. The March 2023-born home-bred bull by Mosshall Red Ferdinand U922 marked Mr Taylor's best price to date. It went home with A. Mylius and Partners, Newport-on-Tay, Fife.

Next at this money was the reserve senior champion, Idvies Panama Z144, another from Alastair and Graeme Fraser. A home-bred bull out of Idvies Parba V870, it sold to G. and S. Heddle, Stromness, Orkney.

A further two bulls sold for 10,000gns. First in the ring was the overall and intermediate champion, Duncanziemere Jenson Z535 from Alastair, Alastair and Brian Clark, Cumnock. By Auchincrieve Exodus U285 which has bred sons to 30,000gns and out of Duncanziemere Jody V306, which has also bred sons to 30,000gns, it went home with B. and J. Mackay, Caithness.

Next at this money was the reserve junior champion, Tonley Endpart Z105 from Neil Wattie and family. Half-brother to the 24,000gns Tonley Endgame and yearling bull champion at last year's Black Beauty Bonanza, it sold to Elsick Estate, Newtonhill.

Kenny and Callum Dunlop, Dalry, made 9,500gns for their June 2023-born Wedderlie Eballoteer V991 son, Auchengray Rancher Z945. Out of the privately purchased Andrews Rosebud W573, it sold to D. Ballie, Lanark.  

Three bulls sold for 8,000gs. The first was Thrunton Reiver Z654 from Ian Campbell, Alnwick. By Tonley Kasper U512 which Mr Campbell bought at Stirling for 13,000gns and has bred sons to 20,000gns, it sold to Elsick Estate.  

The second at this money from John Elliot, Kelso, was a May 2023-born Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 son, Rawburn Jinx Eric Z110. Out of Rawburn Joy Erica L342, which has bred sons to 29,000gns, it went home with Glympton Farms, Glympton.  Gordon Edris Z963, a Rawburn Joes Eric V050 son from the Trustees of the Late Gordon R. Brooke, Earlston, was next at this money. Out of Gordon Ellen Erica U354, it sold to W. Mather and Sons, Fern.

Aberdeen-Angus females sold to a high of 8,000gns for Foxhill Diamond Mist Z253, from Mike and Melanie Alford, Cullompton. By Linton Gilbertines President S021, the heifer was placed junior and native inter-breed champion at Stars of the Future in 2023 and first in its class at last year's Royal Highland Show. Full sister to last February's female champion which sold for 6,800gns to an undisclosed buyer.  

Next at 6,000gns was another from the same home, Foxhill Princess Caroline Z184. Out of Blelack Princess Caroline T867 and full sister to last year's Stars of the Future junior native inter-breed champion, it was sold to J.T. Fleming and Son, Hawick.

Lincoln Red makes 13,000gns.

The sole Lincoln Red entry for the day, Trainview Cassius, from James Cameron and Valerie Orr, Forfar, sold for 13,000gns. A home-bred bull by Anwick Yield, it marks the duo's best price to date from their newly established two-cow Lincoln Red herd. It sold to A. Mylius and Partners, Newport-on-Tay, Fife.

Hereford bulls sell to 7,000gns high  

A bid of 7,000gns led the bidding for the Hereford bulls, with four bulls sold to an average of £5,329, up £1,391 on the year.  

Sale leader was Auckvale 1 Almighty from John, Tom and Willam Kemp, Bishop Auckland. The first bull the family have sold at Stirling, it went home with D.P. Nicholson, Quoys.

Making 4,800gns was Harveybros 1 A-Ladies-Man from the father and daughter team, George and Sophie Harvey, Glasgow. The May 2023-born Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman son sold to W. and A. Hogarth, Ayrshire.  

Criffel 1 Apollo from Ewan Burgess, Dumfries, was next at 4,500gns. Out of Criffel 1 Shona, it was also knocked down to Messrs Hogarth.
