
Louth champion which sold for £2,630
Store cattle record smashed at Louth
There was a high quality entry of store cattle at the Farmers Guardian supported spring show and sale at Louth which attracted buyers from across the country.
David Shelton, Melton Mowbray, judged the pre-sale show awarding the championship to a 15-month-old Limousin cross steer from Riby Grange Farming Co, Grimsby which sold for a new market record for a store animal of £2,630 to A. Cash, Boston.
Reserve champion went to R. L. Ritchie and Son, Wainfleet, with a pen of 12-month-old pure Limousin bulls which topped at £2,570 selling to A. G. Watson, Co Durham. Other bulls for the same home traded at £2,520, £2,400 and £2,220 with 12-mnth-old steers to £2,030 and heifers to £1,990.
A run of Limousin and Aberdeen-Angus sired cattle from M.F. Strawson, Aylesby, topped at £2,520 with their run of 33 averaging £1,995.45.
A.W. Turner and Sons, Immingham, topped at £2,280 for 15-month-old Limousin cross heifers with others at £2,100.
Shaw Bros, Binbrook, sold a run of 12-month-old Limousin steers and heifers topping at £2,120, with other pens trading at £1,940 and £1,890.
A.W. Lewis and Son, Grainthorpe, sold a run of 12-15-month-old Limousin sired cattle to £1,920 and £1,900 twice and Pennell Bros, Louth, topped at £1,800 for 12-mnth-old Limousin crosses.
A run of British Blue crosses from Wilkinson Bros, Sudbrook, sold to £1,810.
Beever Agriculture, Woodhall Spa, sold British Blue sired heifers to £1,700 and S. Roberts and Sons, Boston, sold 15-mnth-old Simmental cross steers to £1,880.

Sheep dogs sell to £9,000 online
South-West Wales handler and triallist, Llion Harries, Crymych, was top dog on price with a £9,000 sale of his rising two-year-old black, white and mottled Jim at Skipton's online Spring working sheepdog sale. The son of Preseli Jock sold to Canadian buyer, Campbell Forsyth, Eriksdale.

Second top call of £7,500 was for the part-broken dog , October 2023-born Deepdale Glen, a black and white dog by Ricky Hutchinson's Jonah, from Emma Jane, Derwent, in the Derbyshire Peak District, which sold to a Chipping Norton buyer.
Next in the part-broken section at £5,100 was the12-month-old black and white bitch, Lin, from the same home, and from Emma's partner, David Wood. Also by Jonah, Lin sold to John Atkinson, Escrick.
Kevin Evans, Brecon, took £6,700 for his Welsh nursery champion, Syfnny Sal, a fully-broken November 2023-born black and white daughter of Hendre Sam. It sold to American buyer, Karen Thompson, New Kent County, Virginia, who also paid £5,400 for Kemi Moss another fully-trained black and white dog, Kemi Moss, from the same home.
Making £5,000 was Benji, a July 2022-born black and white dog from Neil Sutherland from Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands. By TA O'Sullivan's Mac, it went to an undisclosed Welsh buyer.
Andrew Heathcote, Macclesfield, took £4,100 for his January 2023-born black and white dog, Jaff, by S. Cottrell's Jim, which sold to Kenneth Brehmer, Turriff.

Store cattle to £3,000 at Penrith
An increased trade for store cattle at Penrith saw the entry of 208 head average £1,908.72 topping at £3,000 for a Limousin bullock from J.B. Holliday and Son, Langwathby, bought by David Barker, Scarborough.
W. Routledge, Newcastleton, sold a run of 22-month-old out-wintered Charolais bullocks and heifers to average £2,487.14, topping at £2,675 for a pair of bullocks.
A consignment of 10 Limousin cross heifers and bullocks from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, averaged £2,483, topping the heifer section at £2,845.
Dairy-bred bullocks topped at £2,515 for a pair of 20-month-old British Blues from F. Dickinson, Wigton. I.L. Pigg, Linewath, sold 22-month-old Aberdeen-Angus to £2,295. KJ Burne, Langwathby, sold 10, 20-month-old dairy-bred Limousin and British Blue heifers to average £2,061.67, topping at £2,335.

Dairy dispersal peaks at £3,500 twice
The dispersal sale of the entire herd of commercial Holstein Friesians for A.J.P. Dairies on-farm at Wrenbury, Cheshire, topped at £3,500 twice.
Firstly, for a third calver by Denovo Archer which had been calved six weeks and giving 46kgs daily which went to a Cardiganshire buyer.
The other £3,500 milker was a Rosylane LLC Spock heifer which had calved last August and was back in-calf again for August. It went to a Pembrokeshire buyer who paid £3,400 for a September calver still giving 31kgs daily as a heifer.
August and September calving cattle were in demand with Cardiganshire buyer taking home a 35kgs fourth calver due in August with its fifth calf and a September calved heifer due again in September, both at £3,400. One Cornish buyer bought 34 milkers due in August and September.
In-calf heifers sold to £2,150, yearlings to ££1,250 and heifer calves to £650.
Averages - 324 milkers £2,200; 50 in calf/served heifers £1,552; 110 yearling heifers £682; 31 heifer calves, £410.

Non-pedigree heifer leads Gisburn dairy sale
The sale topper at Gisburn's dairy sale at £3,350 was a non-pedigree 35kg heifer from Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire Cheese company, Goosnargh.
J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, sold two fresh heifers in the non-pedigree section at £3,050 and £3,000.
Leading the pedigree trade at £3,200 was a Copdon heifer from G. D. Donkin, Blackburn. The heifer is out of a Peak Ramsey daughter in the Donkins' Pretzel family, and was followed in the bidding at £3,020 by Thornley Leap Peggy from J. Seed and Sons, Preston. The same vendors had a Boghill Glamour Santos daughter at £2,880.
Next in the pedigree section at £2,980 was Whitecarr Adorable Donna 4 by the Stantons sire from D. Noblett, Kirkham, while R. and M. Cowgill, Preston, took a £2,950 bid on their Hoole Sassafras Akregloss 4.
At the same price, A. Lawson and Son, Otley, sold a 35kg Pine-Tree Pursuit daughter from their Newbirks Jazz family and had two other pedigrees at £2,750 and £2,680.

Champion tops Caithness Young Farmers sale
At the Young Farmers overwintering competition at Caithness Livestock Centre, Quoybrae, the championship went to a 472kg Charolais cross heifer from Bower club member Sophie Tucker, 21, Wick. Bred by A.S. Budge, Halkirk, it went on to sell for the top price of £3,050 to Small Burn Farms, Duffus. It also won the special prize for the best Charolais-sired calf.

The reserve champion from Sophie Gunn, Thurso, was a 495kg Limousin cross heifer, which sold for £2,500 to the judge, Craig Buchan, Longside, and also won the prize for the best paraded and presented animal.
The winner of the W. and A. Geddes Perpetual Trophy for the best daily liveweight gain and the prize for the best gross margin bullock was awarded to Isla Mackay, Watten, for her 534kg Limousin bullock, which had a daily liveweight gain of 1.560kg.
The best daily liveweight gain heifer, at 1.341kg/day, went to William Campbell, Watten, with his 534kg Limousin cross heifer.
The second top price of £2,620 was for a 408kg British Blue cross heifer from Sophie Tucker, which sold to G. and L. Carrol, Kirkton of Kingoldrum.
The next top price of £2,380 was achieved three times. First by Isla Mackay for her 534kg Limousin bullock, and then twice by Abbie Dunnet, Canisbay, for her home-bred Limousin bullocks, scaling 420kg and 560kg respectively. All three animals were bought by W. and J. Cameron, Keith.

Flying trade for store cattle at Bentham
The dearest trade ever seen for store cattle in Bentham topped at £2,850 for a British Blonde heifer from S. Hill, Slyne.
Aberdeen-Angus steers from I. and M.E. Askew, New Hutton, and W.K. and R. Harrison, Docker, sold to £2,800, with the Harrisons' consignment of 16 averaging £2,709.
The strongest cattle were £2,400 plus, with medium-term feeding cattle at £2,100-£2,300, and a pen of five Aberdeen-Angus from S.W. Thornber and Sons, Newton-in-Bowland, to £2,350.
The dairy-bred types were £1,600-£1,900. A run of yearlings from P.J. Allonby, Windermere, sold to £1,850, with others to £1,840 and £1,800. Messrs Ellwood, Grizebeck, sold dairy-bred Limousins to £2,280, with the consignment averaging £2,130. British Blues from A.R. Beckerton, Tatham, sold to £2,480.
A small entry of black and whites topped at £1,900 for M.E. and B. Mason, Tatham, and averaged £1,600.

Skipton dairy champion makes £3,300
The pre-sale show champion, Aireburn Rubi Taz Melissa, a fresh heifer giving 31kg from Brian and Judith Moorhouse, Bell Busk, topped Skipton's dairy sale at £3,300 when selling to Alan Middleton, Beamsley.
Reserve champion went to Peter Baul, Bishop Thornton, with Ravensgate Marcello Heather 440, which made £2,300.

A pair of heifers, Aytonian Princess 234 and Aytonian Signet 862, from Messrs Petch, Great Ayton, made £3,100 and £2,900 respectively. A daughter of Genhotel Harley P, Lindomoor Harley Pixie 2, from Miles and Oliver Stapleton, Huby, made £2,950.
In-milk heifers averaged £2,528, and three in-calf heifers due in May to the Aberdeen-Angus from Paul and Janet Bolland, Airton, averaged £2,157.
