Aberdeen-Angus' lead native judging at Stars of the Future calf show event

Exhibitors were back at Stirling Agricultural Centre over the weekend as the eleventh Stars of the Future calf show got underway.

Attracting more than 350 entries, the event kept to the format of a senior and junior championship across each breed, culminating in a native and continental inter-breed finale for both age group.

Leading the native section was the Aberdeen-Angus breed which claimed both the senior and junior trophies in the inter-breed finale under judge John Morton, Dumfriesshire, who described both native champions as ‘very correct’ and ‘easy winners’ in his view.

Native senior champion was 14-month-old Retties Lady Ruth W148 from Stirling based Jamie Rettie. The Rawburn Transformer daughter, out of Royal Highland Show champion breeder Wall Lady Ruth E397, also claimed reserve overall in the Angus section at Agri-Expo last month.

Reserve

Reserve native senior was Westbroad Paddy, a home-bred Beef Shorthorn bull from Duncan Welsh, Fenwick. By 12,000gns Shawhill Leroy and out of Westbroad Abbie, the 15-month-old bull will be forward for sale at Stirling bull sales next year.

Topping the junior native line-up was seven-month-old Aberdeen-Angus, Oak Moor Kingston X574, from Michael and Melanie Alford, Devon. Bought privately from breeders Tom Slater and Gini Guttery earlier this year, the Duncanziemere Edwin son out of Oak Moor Katya R295 also stood native champion at the Agrifest event this month. Kingston is now set to be used on the Foxhill Angus herd.

Taking the reserve junior native ticket to a cheer from onlookers was the Highland heifer Julie of Tippetcraig from the Burns family, Bonnybridge. Brought out by Lindsay Stark on its first outing, Julie is an Eoin Mhor 17 of Mottistone daughter, out of Julie 3 of Mottistone which was bought in-calf from the Mottistone dispersal in September last year.

The continental senior contest saw a victory for Kevin Watret, Annan, with his home-bred 13-month-old British Blue heifer Solway View Perfect. By Dodou de St Remacle, which has bred Royal Highland, Great Yorkshire and Royal Lancaster champions, and out of Solway View Katie, it heads to LiveScot and the English Winter Fair next.

Reserve continental senior was Burradon Raquel, a 16-month-old Charolais heifer from Brailes Livestock, Moreton-in-Marsh. A Clenagh Lyle daughter bought privately from breeder Chris Curry this year, it was one of several prize winners brought out by the Rettie team from Perth on the day.

Junior

The junior continental finale was led by 10-month-old Simmental bull Annick Memphis, shown on behalf of the late Lachlan Quarm, Irvine, Ayrshire, by Matt Gilliland and Andrew Perratt. Memphis is by the 15,000gns Wolfstar Gold Diggar, which bred the overall senior champion at the 2019 Stars of the Future event, and is the first calf out of Annick Desiree’s Joy.

Reserve junior continental was Settle-based Jennifer Hyslop’s commercial heifer, Brownie, a home-bred Limousin cross by Uptonely Living the Dream and out of Great Yorkshire Show 2019 commercial section winner Queen of Hearts.
