Record dairy average at Skipton
Trade at February's second dairy sale at Skipton was described as phenomenal producing what is believed to be a new mart record average dairy price of £2,870.
There was a total clearance of 11 heifers in-milk and with six making more than £3,000 from five different vendors.
The first prize senior heifer in-milk went on to be crowned overall champion and was one of a brace sired by Siemers Hanley from Richard Gawthorp, Bradford, who was picking up his third dairy title at Skipton. Calved since February 2 and giving 32kg, it made the day's top price of £3,700, to Kevin Midgely, Malton.
The second prize senior heifer and reserve champion, a Rager daughter giving 34kg from Messrs Forts, Silsden Moor, made £3,550 and headed with two others to father and son, Richard and George Sutcliffe, Queensbury.
Having won the second in-milk class for junior heifers, Hawbank Monument P Rosemary from Andrew Ayrton and family, Eastby, sold at £3,350.
The long trip from Great Ayton saw two heifers both sell over the £3,000 barrier for the Petch family. They included the fortnight-calved Aytonian Bluebell 367, already giving 36kg, which made £3,100 after being placed third in the senior heifer in-milk class.
Its herdmate, the Applejax-sired daughter, Aytonian Signet 843, giving 33kg, made £3,050.
The final animal to make £3,000 plus was the best pedigree-bred heifer, Aireburn Highlight Stephanie, from Brian and Judith Moorhouse, Bell Busk. This January 28 calved 30kg heifer, bred from six consecutive generations of VG and EX, made £3,020.
Other heifers from Pete Baul's Ravensgate herd, Bishop Thornton, from his Sparkle family, as well as a second entry from Richard Gawthorp, also both headed to new homes at £2,800 apiece.

Store cattle to £2,600 at Hexham
The sale of store cattle at Hexham peaked at £2,600 three times. Firstly, for an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Philip Tomlinson, Consett. This was followed by a Charolais cross from Messrs Walton, Flotterton, who averaged £2,470 for nine bullocks.
The final one at £2,600 was a British Blue cross bullock from John and James Gilson, Quebec, Co Durham, who also sold a British Blue heifer at £2,400 to level at £2,423 for six cattle which included the dearest Limousin bullock of the day at £2,580.
The female trade peaked at £2,460 for a Charolais cross from Telfer Bros, Capheaton. Making £2,340 was a Limousin cross heifer from David White and Sons, East Uppertown.
The leading native female at £2,120 was an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields.
Cattle In the middle age bracket were led by Ken and John Robinson, Warksfieldhead, who sold British Blue and Limousin cross bullocks at £2,360, £2,290 and £2,250.
A run 20 of Aberdeen-Angus yearling steers from Pip Robson, Chathill, North-Northumberland peaked at £1,860 and averaged £1,490.
Suckled calves sold to £1,640 for a pair of Charolais from Messrs Laurie, Duns, with heifers to £1,550 for Charolais from James Forster, East Wharmley.

British Blue heifer leads Middleton trade at £6,000
The show and sale of store cattle at Middleton in Teesdale topped at £6,000 for a British Blue heifer from J.C. and J. White, Lunedale.
They also had the pre-sale show champion, a Limousin cross steer which went on to sell for £2,500. They sold others at £3,500 and £3,000 with their consignment of 21 steers and heifers averaging £2,532.38.

The reserve champion was a Limousin cross heifer from D.J. Mallon, Eggleston, which later sold for £3,500.
The heifer section averaged £1,770.31, a rise of £501.01 on the year with steers averaging £1,661.67, up £378.66 on the year.

Cast cow record at Carlisle
The sale of 357 cast cows at Carlisle saw a new record set when a 774kg British Blue cow from Messrs Forrester, Down-by-Rigg, sold for 400p/kg (£3,096) to Owain Llyr, Ruthin, with 21 cows selling for more than 300p/kg.
Messrs Athey and Son, High Lovelady Shield, sold a 638kg Limousin cross cow for 374.5p/kg) (£2,389) to Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.
Messrs Wainwright, Todhall, sold British Blue cows for 373.5p/kg (£3,249), 371.5p/kg (£3,558) and 345.5p/kg (£3,230).
Dairy cows were also in demand with Messrs Sloan and Son, Moffat, selling a 653kg Fleckvieh heifer at 347.5p/kg (£2,269). Messrs Vevers, Dumfries, also sold a 606kg Fleckvieh heifer at 345.5p/kg (£2,093).

Calves in demand at Bentham
At the sale of calves at Bentham the 33 Aberdeen- Angus bulls of all ages averaged £448. Topping the section at £585 with an 11-week-old calf was Hannah Kent, Cockerham. John Lawson, Bentham, was next at £565 and Dave Miller, Claughton on Brock, at £550.
Younger six-week old calves were all £425-£465, with only a few falling below £400. Aberdeen-Angus heifers saw three-month-old calves again from Mr Miller at £665 and £570, and six to eight-week-old calves £380-£420, with the next draw £300-£340, with all Aberdeen-Angus heifers averaging £396.
British Blue bulls sold to £670 from Mr Miller, with Mr Lawson at £650. British Blue heifers sold to £600 and £605 with younger sorts £400-£430. Other continentals saw strong Charolais bulls to £550 for Oliver Parkinson, Woodplumpton.
Dairy bulls saw Fleckviehs to £470 for Will Robinson, Slaidburn, £390 for a Monbeliarde from Gary Barnes, Kendal and £340 for a black and white from Hannah Kent.

First ewes and lambs at Skipton
The first sale of ewes and lambs at Skipton saw J.M. Smith and Son, Skipton, sell four correct Texel ewes with single Texel lambs at £340 per outfit. The same vendors also sold two pens of correct Texel ewes with twins at £400/outfit.
Richard Umpleby, Killinghall, sold Texel ewes with twins at £410/outfit and Suffolk ewes with twins to £400/outfit. Suffolk ewes with singles topped at £200 for C.J. Dews, Wakefield, and Mule ewes with twins sold to £300/outfit for J.A. and J.C. Throup, Silsden Moor, with a pen of seven broken-mouth Mule ewes with twins making £340/outfit.

Strong trade for store cattle at Cutcombe
The sale of 330 store cattle, the majority of which were 10-14 months of age, at Cutcombe topped at £2,250/head (436p/kg) for 22-month-old 515kg Limousin steers from L.E. Entwhistle, Wiveliscombe.
Steers sold to 451p/kg for 10-month-old 310kg Charolais crosses from Everard Partners, Dulverton, who also topped the heifers per kilo at 436p for 15-month-old 435kg Charolais crosses. Their run of 207, 63% of which were heifers, averaged £1,351 (390p/kg).
A consignment of 15 Charolais heifers from Matthew Ellicott, Porlock, averaged £2,080 (393p/kg).
J. Brown, Winsford, sold 11-month-old 530kg Charolais steers to £2,160 (407p/kg) with 20-month-old Aberdeen-Angus cross steers to £1,990 (286p/kg) for C.J. Hancox, Dulverton.
Devon steers topped at £1,410 (391p/kg) for 11-month-old entries from W. Wyatt, Stoodleigh.
Top price heifers per head at £2,230 were 28-month-old 570kg Charolais crosses consigned by Messrs Ellicott.
Messrs Entwhistle sold 21-month-old 465kg Limousin cross heifers to £1,830 (393p/kg) with 21-month-old 500kg Aberdeen-Angus cross heifers from Messrs Hancox selling to £1,830 (366p/kg). C.J. Tucker, Exford, sold 22-month-old 445kg Devon heifers to £1,500 (337p/kg).
Averages – 127 steers, 409.02p/kg; 192 heifers, 375.28p/kg.

Flying calf trade at Leyburn
At Leyburn's sale of rearing calves five, five-six-week-old British Blue bull calves sold for more than £800. They topped at £830 twice for Will Shuttleworth, Skipton, who sold a Charolais bull calf at £755, and averaged £773 for his consignment.
Kenneth Banks, Bishopdale, and Stephen Simpson, Bishop Monkton, sold British Blue bulls to £820 with Messrs Dent, Jervaulx, at £810.
Messrs Simpson sold an Aberdeen-Angus bull calf at £700 with an Aberdeen-Angus heifer from Messrs Banks at £460 with a British Blue heifer from the same home making £580.
