Auction mart sales round-up: Flying dairy trade at Holsworthy and sheepdogs sell to £16,200 online

A round-up of this week's livestock sales, including Gisburn, Clitheroe and Lockerbie

Champion tops sale of North Country Cheviot females

Topping the sale of North Country Cheviot females at Lockerbie at £4,000 was the pre-sale show Park champion, a three-crop ewe in-lamb with triplets from the Kelso flock of J. Thomson, Kelso. The buyer was Messrs Tapson, Crieff.

Next, at £2,600 and from the same home, was the second prize winning Park ewe, a two-crop entry, also carrying triplets, which sold to Messrs Harrison, Holmrook, Cumbria.

Making £2,200 was the third prize Hill gimmer by Mowhaugh Constricter from Bowmont Farming's Attonburn flock, Yetholm, which sold, in-lamb to Badanloch Xtra Special, to Messrs Ellis, Corwen.

Also making £2,200 was a gimmer by Allanshaws Bullseye, in-lamb to Bardnaclavan Cooper, which was sold as part of the production sale for R. and N. Barclay's Harestone flock, Insch. It was knocked down to Messrs Sleigh, Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire.

At £2,000 was a gimmer carrying twins from Messrs Thomson, which went to Messrs Wilkinson, Wigton.

Averages: 35 ewes, £884.28; 54 shearling gimmers, £738.42; 13 ewe hoggs, £560; 2 black ewe and gimmers, £525.

Sheepdogs peak at £16,200 online 

The online sale of working sheepdogs hosted by Farmers Marts (R. G. Jones), Dolgellau, topped at £16,200 for Jazz, a nine-month-old bitch by D. M. Howells's Dick from Kevin Evans, Brecon, which sold to a buyer from Norfolk.

The fully trained section topped at £15,200 for Aran Meg from D. Jenkins, Tynygraig, Ceredigion, which will be heading to Norway.

Cilhaul Bonnie, a farm working bitch from O. Jenkins, Trefeglwys, sold for £12,200, and Gwen, a full-trained bitch from D. M. Howells, Port Talbot, made £10,200.

Huntaways sold to £6,100 for Duke from E. Rees, Rhyader, who also sold the Huntaway bitch, Ruby, for £4,500.

Mac, an 11-month-old dog from Michael Healy, Republic of Ireland, topped the partly trained section at £15,100. Cefneithin Tess by Llanfarian Mirk from S. C. Jones, Corwen, sold for £9,000, and Spot, from Mr Healy, made £7,000.

Pups topped at £2,750 for Whiteley Jet, a six-month-old daughter of Dick from Kevin Evans, with Brondrefawr Meg from J. Jones, Brondrefawr, making £2,500.

Averages: Trained, £4,298; partly-trained, £2,836; pups, £1,685.

Clearance: 81%

Flying dairy trade at Holsworthy

A top price of £3,100 with all milkers averaging £2,359 were some of the highlights of Holsworthy's dairy sale, where 41% of the cattle sold for more than £2,000.

The sale leader, at £3,100, was a second calver yielding 43kg from the Kellow family, Treveglos Farm, Bodmin. They also sold other fresh calved cows to £3,000, £2,800 and £2.700, with the consignment averaging £2,678.

S. J. Hockridge and Son, Bideford, topped at £2,850 for the third calver, Highpark Rubels June 3, with a second calver, Highpark R2D2 June 4, at £2,600.

Heifers sold to £3,000 for W. J. A., S. J. and D. A. Hain, Redruth, who sold other heifers to £2,900 twice.

Dairy cattle at Holsworthy

Treveglos Farm sold heifers to £2,950 with Alan and Kerenza Hembrow, Taunton, topping their consignment at £2,700.

In-calf heifers topped at £2,080 for Carsella Altaleap Adele, due in March, from Greg Haste, Shebbear.

Heifers due June/July also sold to £1,850 for Willsbro Tropic Pledge 5373, due in July to the Aberdeen-Angus, from J. Congdon and Son, Saltash.

M. F. Yendell and Son, Crediton, sold a high genetic bred and well-reared consignment of pedigree yearling heifers, topping at £1,250 twice for Morchard Lennon P Tash and Morchard Maggiore P Laura.

Younger heifers sold to £1,050 for a group of four July 2024-born heifers, with the consignment averaging £1,013.

Averages: Freshly calved heifers, £2,344; freshly calved cows, in-calf heifers due March-May, £1,685; in-calf heifers due June-July, £1,363; January-July 2024-born youngstock from pedigree Morchard herd, £1,013.

Derbyshire Gritstones lead Clitheroe multi-breed sale

At the multi-breed sale of female sheep at Clitheroe, Derbyshire Gritstones sold to 800gns for a shearling scanned with twins to a High Moor ram from W. J. and I. France, Chipping. The buyer was N. Pepper, Laneshawbridge.

A shearling from J. and M. Redfearn, Stockport, scanned for twins made 600gns to the judge, Freddy Shorrock, Cliviger. Clive Mitchell, Homfirth, sold gimmer hoggs to 550gns to the Harding family, Caernarfon.

Lonks topped at 480gns for a shearling from the Kempson family, selling again to Messrs Pepper. The champion, an aged ewe from the T. Whitwell and Sons, Pendleton, sold to the judge, William Beattie, Newton in Bowland, for 380gns. Gimmer hoggs from Messrs Mitchell sold for 300gns to S. and C. Riley, Rossendale.

The new section for Whitefaced Woodlands topped at 520gns for a ewe from R. Mahon, which went to J. Jones, Machynlleth, with a ewe from J. B. Jones, Powys, selling at 280gns to the judge George Lees, Rochdale.

North Country Cheviots sold to 550gns for a ewe carrying twins from K. O. Stones, Richmond, which sold to G. Bretherton, Preston. Shearling ewes from the same vendor sold to 400gns to C. Sharrock, Ulverston.

In the commercial section, a flock dispersal for R. and A. Smith topped at £280 for Texel cross Beltex and averaged £259.

J. Walton-O'Gara sold in-lamb Texels from shearlings upwards averaging £273 and topping at £290. R. and C. Parkinson sold aged continental ewes scanned with triplets up to £295, averaging £266, H. and E. Carr sold 20 aged Mule ewes to £220, and a Badger Faced Texel aged ewe from A. L. Thompson made £270.

Averages: North Country Cheviot – 1 ewe, £577.50; 3 shearlings, £395.50; 4 hoggs, £273; Derbyshire Gritstone – 1 ewe, £546; 5 shearlings, £531.30; 9 hoggs, £263.60; Bluefaced Leicester – 2 ewes, £341.25; 2 shearlings, £393.75; Lonk – 2 ewes, £330.75; 3 shearlings, £413; 7 hoggs, £237; Whitefaced Woodland – 15 ewes, £201.60; Teeswater – 2 shearlings, £273; 1 hogg, £189; Kerry Hill – 7 hoggs, £142.50.

Pedigree dairy heifers to £3,700 at Gisburn

A Newbirks heifer from A. Lawson and Son, Arthington, topped Gisburn's dairy sale at £3,700, where 22 of the 90-plus entries sold at £2,700 and above.

Sale leader was an Endco Viewpoint daughter in the Heliotrope family, giving 39kg.

At £3,000 was Aireburn Graziano Honey from G. B. Moorhouse, Skipton, which had a string of EX dams in its near pedigree. At £2,920 and £2,900 were heifers from G. D. Donkin, Blackburn, and R. C. and S. W. Beecroft, Killinghall.  

Non-pedigree heifers sold to £2,900 from J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, and to £2,880 for a 39kg heifer from Myerscough College, which had four heifers levelling at £2,788. J. A. Lawn, Bradford, sold two 30kg heifers at £2,850 and £2,820.

Pedigree newly calved cows peaked at £2,800 twice, firstly for the 51kg second calver Hillrobin Peggy 20 from B. W. and J. Robinson, Treales, and then for a 35kg fresh second calver from the Sandrest herd of J. and M. Sanderson, Kirkham.

In-calf heifers topped at £1,950 twice. Firstly, from D. and P. Spence and Son, Silsden, in-calf to a Limousin, then from A. R. and C. A. Parkinson, Chipping, in-calf to a Holstein.

Averages: Pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,552; non-pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,302; pedigree newly calved cows, £2,488; non-pedigree newly calved cows, £2,040; in-calf heifers, £1,739.
