Limousin bull awarded top honours in Northumberland beef judging

It was a clean sweep for continental cattle in the beef judging at Northumberland Show this year, with a Limousin bull and British Blonde cow taking the supreme and reserve overall tickets.

Star of the show was continental section winner, Upperffrydd Power, a three-year-old Limousin bull from Thor Atkinson, Cumbria, which he bought at Carlisle two years ago for 2,500gns.

A 140,000gns Truman Jagger son, out of Loosebeare Fantastic daughter, Foxhillfarm Josyln, Power was unbeaten in its classes on the 2021 circuit and its first calves will be out at the Limousin Society 50thanniversary sale in July.

Reserve inter-breed went to the reserve continental champion, the British Blonde cow, Brownhill Netta, from the same home. Bought from Tom and John Hope, Strathaven, our of Carlisle, in 2018, five-year-old Netta is by Hallfield Homer and was shown with its five-month-old Ark Maverick-sired heifer calf Newland Tanza.

On its first time out at Northumberland, it will head to most of the major shows this summer.

Judge

Inter-breed judge Seonaid McLaren, Perthshire, said it was a close competition between two fantastic animals, with her champion just having the edge with its sheer size, power and presence in the ring.

Stouphill Murphys Prince W301, a home-bred two-year-old Aberdeen-Angus bull from Billy, Kate, Dallas and Ruth Allen, Alnwick, claimed the native championship. A son of Logie Defiance, out of Stouphill Marsala Pearl which has bred bulls to 17,000gns, Prince is being retained as a stock bull for the herd at home and will head to the Royal Highland Show next.

Native

Reserve native champion was Millerston Irania Poppy, a two-year-old Beef Shorthorn heifer by Bushypark Iger from Mark Phillips, Castle Douglas. Bought from the Millerston dispersal sale in September last year, it was brought out by Dougie McBeath and will be shown at Lincoln next.

Jennifer Hyslop, Girvan, Ayrshire’s, April 2021-born Limousin cross heifer, Brownie, took the commerical championship. The home-bred Uptonely Living the Dream daughter is out of a Limousin cross cow, Queen of Hearts, which stood commercial champion at the 2019 Great Yorkshire Show.

Sheep

Texels led the judging in the sheep section, with the individual inter-breed sash going to a home-bred gimmer from Jeff Aiken of the Procters flock, Lancashire. By 350,000gns Sportsman Double Diamond, which sold to a three-way partnership between Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn flock, Maybole, Procters Farm, Procters flock, Lancashire, and Messrs Teward, New View flock, Darlington, at the 2020 Scottish National Texel Sale, Lanark, and out of a ewe by Sportsmans Batman, the gimmer will be shown at the Royal Highland next.

In reserve was the Suffolk champion, a home-bred two crop ewe from Michael Walton of the Roseden and Lilburn flock, Wooler, which was being shown for the first time.

Judge, Robert Raine, East Woodburn, described his champion as an exceptional example of the breed that was good on its legs with good conformation, while his reserve was one of the best Suffolks he has seen with terrific giggots.
