Magic Mike takes Shire supreme title at National Show

The National Shire Show held at Bingley Hall, Stafford, saw Manor Farm Magic Mike awarded the King George V trophy as stallion champion for his owners Andrew and Marcus Callwood, Knutsford, Cheshire

 The champion, a four-year-old stallion by Penrhos Braveheart out of Horsmans Sunshine, was junior champion and reserve supreme at last year's event and is the first black stallion to win the title since its father in 2011.

Penrhos Braveheart was also the sire behind the female champion, Martin Fountain's four-year-old mare, Providence Winnie from his Woodhouse Stud, Ashbourne. Derbyshire. Bred by Frank Pickles out of Laurel Bank Scarlett, Winnie was bought last autumn at the Horse of the Year Show after being placed third. Both male and female champions qualify for the Shire Horse of the Year final at HOYS in October.

Reserve stallion honours went to Hillmoor Trump Card from Philip Moss, Congleton, Cheshire. This 10-year-old son of Martonian Norman is out of Hillmoor Duchess.

The reserve female championship went to Bewholme Glenda, a six-year-old mare by Hillmoor Double Trouble out of Bewholme Bluesmoke from Mark Richardson, Hull.

Junior filly champion was Woodhouse Phenomenal from Martin Fountain. This home-bred filly, led out by son Will, is by Woodhouse Rainman out of renowned show winning mare, Woodhouse Phenomenon.

Junior champion stallion was Cotebrook Ben Lui from the Cheshire stables of Janet and Matthew King. This Leverton Leonardo-sired three-year-old is out of the home-bred dam, Cotebrook Loch Loyal.

In the gelding classes, Woodhouse Twenty-Four Carat from Devon farrier, Danny Roberts, took the supreme. Bred by Martin Fountain, this four-year-old by Woodhouse Rainman out of Woodhouse Miss Dynamite had stood reserve for the title last year.

Reserve gelding was Ruskington Ace of Hearts from Lucy Blakey, Lincolnshire. Bred by her father Nigel, this son of Eastcote Excelsius is out of Hartcliff Anastasia.

The ridden championship went to Sarendon Elinsore by Metheringham Upton Hamlet owned by Twilly Whitehouse, Wolverhampton, and ridden by Sammie Griffiths, with Daresbrook Martha by Leverton Leon from Jo-Ann Clubley, Hull, taking the reserve, ridden by Abigail Wagstaff, York.

The HOYS qualifier for the British ridden heavy horse of the year final was won by Sutton Forest Elegance, a daughter of Acle Challenger, owned and ridden by Abigail Wagstaff.

The turnout championship went to John Goodwin from the Isle of Sheppey with his unicorn made up of Dizzy B, Henry and Oscar. Kurt Manders, Colchester, took the reserve with his pair.

Pip Read, Norfolk, had the champion traditional harness set worn by Hillmoor Armani, while Erica Macey-Bracken, Dorset, won the floral championship.

George Beardmore, who is 15-year-old and from Darwen, Lancashire, won both the champion young handler award and the young showman championship.
