 Strong dairy trade at Brock

Trade was sharper on the month at the November show and sale of dairy cattle at Brock auction where pre-sale show judge was Evan Ellis, Oswestry. The championship rosette went to the heifer, Stardlae Crosby Lauren, from J. Burrow and Son, Barton, which went on to sell for £2,600. 

The third prize heifer from the same home, Stardale Einstein Millie sold for £2,480 with their consignment averaging £2,133.

 The reserve champion was the second prize heifer, Bilsbrow Hurricane Olympia, yielding 37kg from Tomlinson Bilsbrow, Bilsborrow which made £2,320.

The monthly consignment from R. and A. Jolleys, Cabus, included the first prize cow, the second calver, Robanne Ponder Dolly, which sold for £2,300. The second prize cow, Robanne Pacini Christmas, from the same vendor made £1,700.

 The consignment from G. and A.E. Smith and Sons, Claughton on Brock, topped at £2,000 for Alandrew Topshot Doll 2. All new calved heifers averaged £1,833 with all new calved cows, which included up to fifth lactation cows, averaged £1,588. 

In-calf pedigree Holstien heifers from R.R. Parkinson and Son, Kirkham, due to calve middle of January to sexed semen sold for £1,700 and £1,500.

Suckled calves at Bishops Castle

At the sale of 325 suckled calves and weanlings at Bishops Castle steers averaged 295p/kg and £1,000/head selling to a high of 393p/kg for a 305kg British Blue from J. A. Wood and Sons, Kinnerton and £1,375 for both a 390kg British Blue from Messrs Fernyhough and Fernyhough, Aberbechan and a Limousin from S. E. Goodall and E. W. Tuffin, Bishops Castle.

Heifers averaged 298p/kg and £965/head topping at 479.6p/kg for a 270kg Limousin from M. and A. Powell, Drefur, and £1,500 for a pedigree 380 kilo Limousin from J. S. and B. M. Vance, Minsterley.

Feeding bulls averaged 293p/kg and £1,158/head with a run from Aston Hall Farms, Montgomery, topping at £1,570.

In the pre-sale show the judge, Ben Attewell, Monmouth, awarded the championship to Messrs Wood with the first prize 300kg steers, which sold for £1,160. Reserve champion went to the winning 285kg heifers from Messrs Powell, which sold for £1,095/head.

Welsh Black females sell to 3,650gns

At the sale of Welsh Blacks at Dolgellau the top price for in-calf females of 3,650gns was for the reserve female champion, Tryfil Celynen 19, a May 2021-born heifer in-calf to Gwern-Cynyddion Bedwyr, from Ioan Roberts, Llanerchymedd, which sold to Elin Fflur Williams, Garndolbenmaen.

The female champion, Tryfil Camelia 28, an April 2021-born heifer, again from Mr Roberts, sold for 2,950gns to one of the judges, James Nixon, Builth Wells.  

Mrs Gwenfair Jones and Sons, Bala, sold Hafodesgob Branwen 103, in-calf to GerddiBluog Ofydd for 2,750gns to Miss Williams.

Maiden heifers sold to 2,550gns for the section champion, Deicws Glain 9, a May 2022-born heifer from G. C. Williams, Abergele, which sold to Mr Nixon. Deicws Marian 34, from the same home sold for 2,400gns to M.P. Jones, Ganllwyd, Gwynedd.

The eight-month-old heifer, Minffordd Delilah, from Bryn Roberts, Minffordd, made 1,120gns to H. W. Jones, Llanfachreth. 

Ynyswen Eigra 6 and its steer calf from Edward Rhys Griffiths, Garndolbeaen, sold for 2,000gns to J. Mathews, Ty Newydd, Caernarfon. 

Averages - in calf females, £2,269.05; maiden heifers, £1,971.90.

Dairy trade strengthens at Gisburn

A pedigree heifer from M. and J. Bristol, Newton-in-Bowland, once again drew the top price at Gisburn's weekly dairy sale, this time at £2,950. 

Their sale leader was a 31kg Secretariat daughter from the Dawn family, carrying their Manunited prefix. N.W. and J.N. Coulthurst and Son, Goosnargh, were the buyers. Two more from the Dawn family, a Rubicon daughter at £2,300 and another Secretariat at £2,150 left a consignment average of £2,467.

 J. Seed and Sons' Thornley herd, Longridge, averaged £2,254 for three - their top at £2,480 being a 32kg Aurora Magee Macho heifer. It sold to B.F. Blezard, Ribchester, who also paid £2,300 for the same vendors' reserve champion a 27kg Rubicon.

At £2,400, A. Outram, Bury sold a very fresh Boxcar heifer, to a Cheshire buyer who also paid £2,350 for a Kimball heifer from L.R. Hamer and Son, Sowerby Bridge.   

Pedigree cows reached £2,350 for a Frazld Firebird sired, 37kg second calver from D.C. Hall, Coniston Cold, which sold to F.A. and T.C.R. Wrathall, Gisburn.  

N. and K. Forshaw, Longridge, Preston, topped the non-pedigree trade with a 31kg Holstein at £2,480 selling to Mr Blezard, while the same vendor sold four other part-Jersey heifers to £2,180.

The first prize in-calf heifer from D.W. and M.N. Ishmael, Wigan, a Sandy-Valley Eifle, in-calf to the Angus for mid-December made £1,720.

Averages - pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,045; pedigree newly calved cows, £2,075; non-registered newly calved heifers, £1,843; non-registered newly calved cows £1,937; pedigree in-calf heifers £1,674.

British Blue leads Barnard Castle Christmas stores

Trade topped at £3,100 at the Christmas sale of store cattle at Barnard Castle for the first prize British Blue heifer from F. and M.P. Allinson and Son, West Briscoe. It sold to one of the judges, Harry Emslie, Peterhead, who also paid £2,800 for the pre-sale show champion, a Limousin heifer from Matthew Brown, Bridlington.

Steers sold to £2,020 for the reserve champion, a Limousin, also from Messrs Allison. It sold to the other judge, Walter Dandie, Fife. 

The top price bull at £2,035 was a Limousin from Rebecca Dobson, Frosterley.

The prize for the top price pen of four or more cattle went to four 13-month-old Limousin steers from J.E. and E. Dobson and Son, Frosterley, which sold for £1,695/head.

The second prize winning Limousin heifer over 13 months old from G.A. Gibson and Son, High Etherley, made £2,500 and the second prize any other breed heifer over 13 months from the same home sold for £2,600.

A. and J. Harrison, Ettersgill, had the first and second prize winning Limousin steers under 13 months old which sold for £1815 and £1,735 respectively.

 Averages - steers, £1,491.40; heifers, £1,558.08; bulls, £1,356.42.

Dairies in demand at Market Drayton

The Whitticase family, Oswestry, topped the dairy sale at Market Drayton at £2,750 with a calved heifer with another of their heifers at £2,200. 

Rob Gadsbey, Yarlet, sold a heifer for £2,500 and Skinner Bros, Melton Mowbray also sold heifers to £2,500 and £2,420.  

Cows topped at £2,500 for David Monk, Lancashire, with a second calver with Skinner Bros also selling second calvers to £2,180. 

The 38 heifer sold to £400 and stock bulls to £2,020 for an 18-month-old Hereford.

Averages - heifers including all breeds and faults, £1,685; cows including all breeds and faults, £1,982.
