Belted Galloway breed record smashed at Castle Douglas

Trade for Belted Galloways was on fire at Castle Douglas where trade topped at 20,000gns with averages up on the year

For the second year running the breed record was broken, this time at 20,000gns for the pre-sale show male champion, Glen King, a two-year-old bull from James Jack, Castle Douglas. Having been bought privately as a calf at foot with its dam, Glen Becky, which goes back to Muil Maggie, and by Lipwood Machermore, it sold to Mochrum Estates, Port William.

Next at 12,000gns was the 18-month-old bull, Lomond Aberlour by Lomond 23 Alpha out of Lomond Rock Rose, from Duncan Maxwell, Drymen, which was knocked down to Sir J.C.L. Keswick, Dumfries, for the Muil herd.

Woodhall Douglas, a two-year-old son of Offthewall Tiberius out of Offthewall Cymene, consigned by Redvers Bell, Northumberland, made 10,000gns to James Pritchards, Rochester, for the Evistones herd.

Three bulls sold for 8,000gns. The first was Polbae Bernie, a red and white bull by Ryehills Elliot from Richard Wilson, which sold to Brian Edgar, Northern Ireland for his Broomhill herd.

Next was Ballindean Marcus, a Lomond Glayva son from Diana Rettie, Inchture, which sold to Chris and Christine Ryder North Yorkshire for their Scaifehall herd.

The third at 8,000gns was the reserve male champion, Mochrum Genesis by Romesbeoch Raymond son from Mochrum Estates which sold to Paul Atkinson, Lancashire, for his Sweetwell herd.

Females

Females sold to 10,000gns for the bulling heifer, Croasdale Tawny Owl, from the Handley family, Clitheroe.  The Lomond Whisky Galore  daughter out of Croasdale Oh Marty and was bought by Mervyn Forster, West Midlands, for his Elgany herd.

 Tottingworth Farms, East Sussex, had the next top female price of 5,000gns for first prize winner, the heifer Tottingworth Aysha 3 which was junior female champion at the Royal Highland Show this year. The buyers were Allan and Susan Campbell, Argyll, for their Crawlaw herd.

Next at 4,600gns was Mochrum Justy 10, a heifer from Mochrum Estates which was in-calf to Romesbeoch Raymond and sold to Messrs Hodgson, Penrith, for their Glencoyne herd.

Champion female was Cessintully Islay by Coulmony Callum from W. Allan, Linlithgow, which went on the sell for 3,000gns to Harry Irvine, Northern Ireland.

The one white Galloway in the sale was the heifer, Peepings Eyebright by Romesbeoch Boris from Doug and Tracy Ross, Shawhead, which sold for 2,000gns to Ivan Rae, Northern Ireland.

Averages - Belted Galloways - 11 bulls, £7,693.63 (+£2,395.91 on 2022); 5 in-calf heifers, £3,738.00 (+£500.50);13 cows with calves, £1,494.23; 29 bulling heifers, £2,382.41 (+543.22); White Galloways - 1 female, £2,100.
