Young farmer focus: Eleri Hughes - 'who better to promote agriculture than the ones living it day by day'

Eleri Hughes, 24, is from Denbighshire, North Wales, but currently lives near Chester, having swapped rounding up sheep and milking cows for a job in the world of agri-marketing.

Background: Born and bred on a sheep farm in Denbighshire, North Wales and later swapping sheep for a spell of milking, it is safe to say farming has always been a big part of who I am.

Growing up around farming, attending agricultural college and later studying at Harper Adams University, I have never doubted that farming was my passion.

But it was not until recently that it clicked, working in agriculture did not have to mean waking up at 5am every morning or being in the field day in and day out.

There is a real need for those with a knowledge of agriculture across the whole supply chain.

Marketing: I guess you can say I fell into marketing. After realising agri-business might not be my thing during my second year at university I found myself going down the marketing route.

My placement year brought me to the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society as a marketing assistant.

Here I managed its social media accounts and started my experience in copywriting and I even got to work during its 30th Winter Fair.Today I work for Hillsgreen, a digital marketing agency specialising in agriculture and it has opened up doors I could not have imagined.

Mission.AG: Recently I have moved into a role that is more focused on our new initiative, Mission.AG.

A new online platform aimed to help connect agriculture with its consumers, I am proud to say that I am a part of the team that wants to make a change in the industry. With so much negativity around agriculture from the general public, especially when it comes to social media, I believe who better to promote agriculture than the ones living it day by day.

This has also recently allowed me to stand in-front of 80 Reaseheath College students, talking as part of a duo, on the importance of agri-marketing and how we hope to change the public perceptions of agriculture with Mission.AG.

Something I never even thought about doing has probably been the most exciting part of my career to date.

I hope to see a change in the ever-widening gap between farmers and their consumers with everyone in the industry working together to make this change happen.
