Suckled calf record equalled at Hexham

At the show and sale of show potential cattle at Hexham the judge, Michael Wynne, Derbyshire, awarded the championship to Messrs Rochester and Murray, Butsfield, who were claiming the title for the third year running.

The champion was a Limousin cross heifer which sold for £5,600 equalling the suckled calf centre record set in 2019. The buyer was Messrs Kitson, Crathorne, who also paid £3,200 for the reserve champion, a Limousin sired steer out of a British Blue dam from the same home.

Older cattle sold to £2,700 and £2,660 for Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Doug Carmichael, Berwick Hill.

The continental trade peaked at £2,660 for a Limousin bullock from Ken Sisterson, Newland Haugh, with 10 bullocks from this home averaging £2,526.
Steven and Rachael Graham, Gilsland, peaked at £2,560 for three 15-16-month-old Limousin cross bullocks to average £2,334 for eleven.

In the younger cattle section, Dennis and Stuart Charlton, Whiteside, sold Limousin sired steers to £2,060 and heifers to £2,220 to average £1,912 for 18 sold at 10-12 months of age.

Tom and Blair Cockburn, Kingside, sold Limousin and Simmental cross steers to £1,900 and heifers to £2,000 to average £1,674 for 13 steers and eight heifers.
The Thompsons, Haltwhistle, sold steers to £2,040 and heifers to £2,400 to average, £2,093.

Broughton champion sells for £2,550

The show and sale of store cattle and show potential calves at Broughton was judged by Andrew Dyson, Masham, who awarded the championship for the haltered cattle to a British Blue heifer from N.A. and J. Temple, Broughton in Furness, which sold for the top price of £2,550 to I, Wilson, Millom.

The reserve champion haltered calf was a 10-month-old British Blue heifer from S.G. Benson, Pennington, which made £1,900 to W. and P.A. Walton, Millom.

The unhaltered championship went to Messrs Temple with a British Blue heifer which sold to the judge for £1,700.

The reserve champion went to a British Blue heifer from the same home which sold for £1,940 to Messrs Beresford, Kirkby in Furness.

Top price steer at £2,280 was an Aberdeen-Angus from R.J. and D. Holden, Broughton in Furness. Top priced bull was a Limousin at £1,895 from N. Cooper and Sons, Broughton in Furness.

Averages: Steers, £1,570.95; heifers, £1,416.67.

Sheepdogs sell to 7,200gns at Skipton

Topping Skipton's field-run sale of working sheepdogs at 7,200gns was Fly, a rising two-year-old, fully-broken black and white bitch, from Kevin Evans, Brecon.

Bred in Northern Ireland by John Connolly, Co Antrim, and by Craig out of Yellowhill Nella, Fly sold to an Norwegian buyer.

Making 4,200gns, also from Mr Evans, was Beacons Brodie, a home-bred son of Swedish import, Middery Frank, which sold to William Bell, Perth.

The second top price of 5,400gns was for the 18-month-old tri-coloured bitch, Tanhill Jess, by Henre Taff from Richard Crowe, Isle of Man, which went to a buyer from East Yorkshire.

At 4,600gns was the four-year-old black and white dog, Tiktok, by Ricky Hutchinson's Jonah, from John Huddleston, Caton, which sold to Brian Casey, Co Tipperary.

Roy Canning, Keighley, sold the 15-month-old tri and mottled dog, Mic, for 4,000gns to D.T. Owen and Sons, Ceredigion.

The unbroken pen topped at 700gns for the seven-month-old lilac tri-coloured dog, Parkhills Nip, from Matt Tomlinson, Muggington, which sold to Daniel Moore, Isle of Man.

Averages: Broken - registered dogs, £2,618; registered bitches, £3,138; unregistered bitches, £2,730; part/unbroken - registered dogs, £699.

Penrith dairy sale peaks at £3,000

The dairy sale at Penrith topped at £3,000 on two occasions.

Firstly, for a five-weeks calved Holstein Friesian heifer giving 34kg, from Messrs Turnbull, Plumpton, which sold to S. Johnstone, Wetheral.

Secondly, for a Holstein Friesian cross Ayrshire heifer, calved 21-days and giving 30kg, from D.W. Cannon and Son, Low Abbey, which was bought by T.F. and G.L. Pollock, Ainstable, with this consignment of eight heifers and six, second to fifith lactation cows averaging £2,333.33.

The Dairy Shorthorn section topped at £1,800 from Messrs Ramsay, Wigton, for a non-pedigree heifer, calved seven months and coming up to drying off.

A run of British Friesian heifers, eight months in-calf to a Friesian bull, from Messrs Strong, Low Brow, topped at £2,500, to W.H. Brass, Low Row, with a pair at £2,100/head bought by D. and S. Spence, Leyburn, with this consignment of 20 averaging just less than £1,800.

Commercial demand for Limousins at Ballymena

Bulls reached 8,000gns, while heifers sold to a top of 6,200gns, at the British Limousin Cattle Society's spring show and sale at Ballymena.

Trade was underpinned by commercial bidders, resulting in a 90% clearance with 35 bulls averaging £4,813/head, down £347 on last year, but with 17 more bulls finding new homes.

Securing the day's top bid of 8,000gns was the junior, reserve male and reserve supreme champion, Carmorn Ultra, from father and son, Francis and Frank McAuley, Toomebridge.

This 18-month-old bull was by the 38,000 Euro Carrickmore Maximus, out of the Ampertaine Nugent daughter, Carnmorn Ruby and has F94L and Q204X myostatin genes. The buyer was B. Blaney, Cushendall.

Carmorn Ultra which sold for 8,000gns

Second top price of 7,200gns, was paid to Robert Clyde, Templepatrick, for the reserve intermediate champion, Clydevalley Ultimate. June 2023-born and by the Staveley Iceland son, Clydevalley Ranger, it sold to C. Windrum, Ballygowan.

The senior, male and supreme overall champion, Spage Unison, came under the hammer at 6,000gns for Paul Campbell, Carnlough. A 20-month-old Gleneagle Icon son, it has F94L and Q204X genes and was snapped up by B. McCullagh, Cookstown.

Females peaked at 6,200gns to average £3,105. Top price was for the female champion, the 17-month-old heifer, Larkhill Unette by Glenrock Redemption out of the Bernish Memphis daughter, Larkhill Rachael, from Brian and Cahir MaAuley, Antrim. The buyer was P. McKeag, Newtownards.

Dairies in demand at Market Drayton

The Western Holstein Club supported show and sale at Market Drayton topped at £3,250 for one of eight heifers from Lachstone Farms, Northwich, which averaged £3,041.

The first prize pedigree heifer, Lachstone Cabo D Beatrice, sold for £3,150 with others at £3,150, £3,080, £3,050 and £3,000.

A.A. Winstanley and Partners, Audlem, averaged £2,905 for six heifers including £3,000 for the second prize pedigree heifer, Rowmar Viewpoint Pine 35, with others at £3,050 and £3,000.

Wyndford Wagyu, Newport, sold heifers to £3,100.

The champion heifer was the first prize commercial heifer, a Brown Swiss cross from M. Weaver, Stone, which sold for £3,080.  

Pedigree cows sold to £3,050 for the first prize winner, Clayden Heroic Lady from the Clayden Farm Partnership, Crewe. The second calver was one of three from the same farm which averaged £2,833.

The second prize pedigree cow was the second calver, Chorlton Sound System Vaakje from J. Lomax and Son, Baldwins Gate, which made £3,000.

R. and R. Vernon and Sons, Burleydam, won the commercial cow class with their second calver which made £2,950.

In-calf heifers sold to £2,100 and a 23-month-old Limousin stock bull sold for £3,920.

Averages: 42 fresh heifers, £2,443; 17 fresh cows, £2,353.

Young Farmers record set at Hexham

At Hexham's YFC Wintering Competition show and sale the David Carr Challenge Trophy for the best YFC calf went to a Limousin cross heifer from Beverlie Younger of Cambo Young Farmers, which had been bought at the Bellingham suckled calf sale.

Standing reserve was a black British Blue cross steer from Emily Robson from Shaftoe Young Farmers, which was bred by the Waltons, Penpeugh.  

The trophy for the best turned out animal went to Sarah Willey of Whitley Chapel Young Farmers, with a British Blue cross heifer bred by Messrs Yeats, Woodhouse.

Taking the D. and K.M. Dickinson Cup for the best native bred show animal was Libby Pattinson, Haltwhistle Young Farmers, with an Aberdeen-Angus cross steer bred by B. Verrill, Sundaysight.   

Winning the J. S Hubbuck Trophy for the best margin was a Limousin cross heifer from Orlena Henderson, Butsfield Young Farmers, which was bred by Messrs Baxter, The Monk.

It sold for a record price for a young farmers animal, of £3,900  to James Crichton on behalf of A Barnett, Shap, leaving a new record margin of £2,760. Eight young farmers saw their animals leave a margin of £1,000 or more.  

The winners of the club competition for the highest average for three or more competitors was Cambo Young Farmers Club, which sold three beasts to earn an average margin of £983.

The club will now receive a cash prize from Hexham and Northern Mart.

The average margin for this year's competition was £771 and an average overall price of £2,041.43 for all 49 head sold.

Drumdow Blackbaldie disperal

The dispersal of the Drumdow Blackbaldie herd on behalf of Robert Parker and family, Drumdow, Stranraer, at Stirling attracted buyers from all over the UK.

The 197 in-calf cows and heifers averaged £3087.30. The in-calf heifers sold to £3,700 twice, second calvers to £3,800 twice and  older cows to £3,700 twice.

The five stock bulls peaked at £4,200 for an Aberdeen-Angus.
